Sonja Donnelly is an American Expressionist painter, exhibiting in many shows throughout the United States. She paints primarily in acrylic but has explored many mediums during her artistic career, including sculpture. For the past three and a half years she has been studying independently and during that time has become proficient in many different mediums, painting occasionally in colored pencil, oil and pastel. Her subjects are mostly women, portraying them with great drama and sophistication. Her palette of vibrant color and bold shapes create a composition of extreme simplicity. She works with both warm and cool, light and dark, using a single light source and deep shadow to create exciting patterns and design. Her work often reflects emotion through the eyes and hands of her subjects. Some of her work is playful, full of fantasy, and symbolism, producing an air of mystery for the viewer to interpret. Her chop, the key, represents new doors to be opened to future growth and endeavors. Sonja believes that almost everything can be made to appear more beautiful and exciting and she strives to that end.
